STATE OF NEW YORK
EXECUTIVE CHAMBER
Proclamation
Whereas, the Empire State has a longstanding tradition of supporting initiatives that promote the well-being of people and that highlight the needs of various sectors of our workforce, including the population of blind and visually impaired performers and entertainers who work long and hard to realize their career aspirations – and while these profusely talented individuals are recognized for their abilities and contributions to the entertainment profession, they face challenges in securing the same rights and opportunities as others working in the industry; and
Whereas, established in 1940, the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) is a non-profit organization that has effectively fought for the rights of blind people throughout the United States, and its Performing Arts Division has been an active component since 2000, serving as a promotional and networking resource to help members working in various areas of entertainment achieve their artistic and financial goals; and
Whereas, the Division seeks to advocate on behalf of blind and visually impaired people in the entertainment field by educating and raising awareness of the concerns and needs of this special community within the general media through live performances, projects, and artistic endeavors that communicate the overall philosophy of the NFB; and
Whereas, the Division’s leadership consists of blind and visually impaired people who have a professional or academic interest in the entertainment field, and they are applauded for representing the interests of blind and visually impaired individuals – including actors, performers, musicians, producers, managers, attorneys, administrators, dancers, poets, voiceover specialists, broadcasters, magicians, and comedians – who are employed in creative and commercial projects and other facets of film, television and live productions, as the Division provides valuable resources and networking opportunities, and a strong voice of support and leadership that has had a positive impact on the lives and careers of many since its activities have come underway; and
Whereas, New York State is committed to ensuring that all New Yorkers with disabilities can enjoy a fulfilling life and one of greater opportunity and independence through advocacy, support and technological advancements and, toward this end, we continuously strive to improve and promote the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, including those who are blind and visually impaired, with special attention given to their rights and needs as members of the workforce; and
Whereas, as a renowned center of arts and entertainment, and home to many individuals who comprise the wide and diverse community of individuals employed in creative and commercial projects, shows and other performances, New York State is proud to join in this special observance that conveys a strong show of support and recognition for blind and visually impaired people working in the entertainment field;
