STATE OF NEW YORK
EXECUTIVE CHAMBER
Proclamation
Whereas, New York State’s beef industry represents a profitable component of our agricultural industry and is a large part of our economy and everyday life; a truly valuable commodity, beef is a regular part of a healthy diet and is used for many products manufactured from cattle; and
Whereas, in New York State, there are nearly 1.5 million bovines; and the more than 14,000 cattle farmers in New York State offer consumers nutritious beef which is the number one protein and also high in iron, zinc, and B-vitamins; also contributing significantly to New York State’s economy, the beef industry generates more than $157 million from the sale of cows and calves for beef consumption; and
Whereas, beef is a popular commodity and a favorite in New York homes; steaks and hamburgers are a favorite at traditional summer barbeques; beef remains a leading choice among meat lovers, whereby, on average, each person consumes 63.2 lbs. of beef each year in the United States; and
Whereas, New York is famous for its many outstanding restaurants and steakhouses, which feature fine cuts of beef, such as the New York Strip or Veal; beef draws customers to restaurants who seek the very best New York has to offer; beef is consumed 83 million times each day across America; and
Whereas, it is fitting and deserving to extend appreciation to the beef-producing families of New York State for their contributions to the economy of the Empire State and for promoting healthy diets among children and families; all New Yorkers applaud the hard work of beef cattle farmers who take part in an important aspect of our State’s agricultural heritage and future;
Now, Therefore, I, David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, August 26, 2008 as
Beef Day at the Great New York State Fair
in the Empire State.
