Proclamation

Whereas, New York State is home to the largest Jewish population in the United States and in observance of Jewish Heritage Month being celebrated nationwide throughout the month of May, we join to commemorate this meaningful occasion with the entire Jewish community; and

Whereas, the Empire State is proud to honor the history of various communities that have not only strengthened our state and nation - but influenced the course of all humankind - and adding to the greatness of this country are individuals and entire communities of Jewish ancestry, many of whom trace their roots back several centuries; and

Whereas, escaping persecution and seeking refuge, it was in 1654 that a small group of Jews from Recife, Brazil arrived in New Amsterdam, what is now New York City, with millions more following, and their story is of unique and compelling significance to both Jewish and U.S. history; and

Whereas, today we celebrate generations of Jewish people from diverse backgrounds who fled oppression and embraced the opportunity of a better life in America and, throughout the centuries, their contributions have been noteworthy and reflect success in many areas including medicine, science, education, the arts, technology, business and industry; and

Whereas, throughout history, New York State's Jewish communities have participated creatively and industriously in every facet of life, working to better our cities and neighborhoods by building schools, libraries, hospitals, houses of worship and many other institutions; and

Whereas, this occasion is also a time of remembrance and thanks for the many Jewish individuals who escaped discrimination and persecution, and in pursuing freedom, found a home in this nation of immigrants; and

Whereas, all New Yorkers can be proud of our State's role as a champion of religious and human rights, and we celebrate with the Jewish community their enduring faith, history and culture, and are inspired by the unity that Jewish people exemplify for all of mankind;

Now, Therefore, I, Eliot Spitzer, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim May 2007 as Jewish Heritage Month and extend best wishes to all Jewish communities as they hold appropriate ceremonies to commemorate this observance.

G i v e n under my hand and the Privy Seal of the State at the Capitol in the City of Albany this ninth day of April in the year two thousand seven.
